How to Get Noticed on Social Media When You’re Just Starting Out

Are you struggling to grow your social media accounts? We all start at zero, and when overnight success doesn’t happen for us, we get discouraged and sometimes even ditch social media altogether. If this sounds familiar, here are some tips to help you get noticed on social media when you are just starting out!

Zero followers. We all start there, but we tend to forget that little nugget of information. We look at others and see a large number of followers and lots of engagement on their social media posts, and immediately our brains tell us it happened with the snap of a finger. When overnight success doesn’t happen for us, we get discouraged and sometimes even ditch social media altogether. If this sounds familiar, here are some tips to help you get noticed on social media when you are just starting out.

Go to your audience and go deep there.

One of my favorite Bible stories is when Jesus met the Samaritan woman at the well. He was not afraid of getting out there and seeking the lost. Jesus didn’t wait for the lost to come to Him — He went to the lost. While some bloggers and authors may find their target audience on Facebook, your people may hang out on Instagram or Pinterest. It is important to go where your audience lives and spend your time there. Find your audience and go to them.

When it comes to social media, quality is definitely better than quantity

Back in the early days of social media, the general rule of thumb was to post multiple times per day, but times have changed. Users want a deeper experience from those they follow, and that means receiving more content they can use. Maybe you don’t have time to post to your social media accounts every day — and that’s OK. The key is to be consistent. Resist the urge to post content “just because.” Make sure your followers are encouraged and called to take action by what you have shared.

Be responsive.

More people are finding and following you — yay! As you continue to be authentic and receptive, followers will want to take the step of interacting with your content. Maybe they will leave a comment or, better yet, share your content with others. Make sure to respond to those comments and shares and thank your followers for being a part of the community. In order to gain followers, be a good follower.

Go live.

Consider going live on your social media platform of choice. Maybe schedule a live session in your Facebook group or record an Instagram reel. Your current followers will begin to put a face to the content, and you may even pick up new followers along the way.

Share and collaborate.

Is there someone you follow on social media who shares content that would benefit your audience? Share that content with your people, making sure to tag or give credit to the original author. Remember, your audience has come to you for support and encouragement. They will appreciate your heart for sharing a much-needed resource.

If this sounds familiar, here are some tips to help you get noticed on social media when you are just starting out!Be encouraged and not intimidated by new beginnings. Instead of trying to reach many, craft your content to the one who needs to hear your message. Be patient, authentic and consistent — and before you know it, you will have a group of dedicated followers who just can’t wait for your next piece of content.

  1. So glad I ran into this discussion tonight, but I have a question for all the ‘social media sisters’ (wink!)

I retired my Facebook account the end of last year. There’s a lot of good, encouraging things out there, but the ads, negativity, drama and junk was just something I felt like living without!

All I really use on a regular basis now is SnapChat and Telegram. I can hear my 16 year old son now. “Mom, that’s so lame!” (I’m rolling my eyes and trying to find a prayer that changes his attitude..sigh)

Does anyone else use either of these outlets to reach others?

Last question… I would honestly like to reach a little further out than my ‘circle of friends.’ Ex. Not be ‘as known’ to people I already know. If that makes no sense, just grin and keep reading…(lol)

    Answers, suggestions, criticism appreciated!

    Thanks in advance!

  2. Oh yes. This statement is so true, “Make sure to respond to those comments and shares and thank your followers for being a part of the community.”

All of your tips are spot-on, friend. Being responsive is how we build authentic community. No one likes to speak and feel unheard. When a follower takes precious time to read and respond, we should find a way to show our appreciation.

  3. Great encouragement for us beginners. We all start at zero, but when we remain consistent and faithful in the small things, God brings the increase. Thank you!
