    The World Needs You and Your Story

    Have you felt that nudge to share your story, but you feel scared to do so? You know your words might be able to help people, but you don’t think you’re the person for the job. We get it. Sharing what you’ve gone through can be nerve-wracking, but the good news is you don’t have to do this alone. Here are four truths meant to encourage you as you take the next step.

    Friend, how do you feel as a writer when God guides you to share your story? Perhaps your first reaction is one of insecurity and comparison. Perhaps you doubt the world needs you and your story. Do thoughts like these cross your mind: I am not the only one who has gone through that, This story has been already told, or I have nothing new to say?  

    The first time when God gently nudged me to share something more than my usual daily experiences in my blog posts, I was very reluctant. He nudged me to write about my infertility and marriage problems in a memoir. I didn’t know anything about how to write a memoir, and my story of battling infertility for many years was too painful and too common, or so I thought. 

    But God remained persistent, and I obeyed. It was a huge learning curve. I needed to learn not only how to write scenes, dialogue and structure a memoir but, most importantly, to define what message I want to convey. Here are four truths I learned in the process that will encourage you to share your story too. 

    • Having a story means having a message. God has already ordained every day of our lives and has foreseen our experiences, struggles, wins and valuable lessons to learn. He wants to use us as a vessel to convey His message of love, grace and restoration, using our unique voices and places in the community. You and your story are a necessary and indispensable part of His grand plan because “you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it” (1 Corinthians 12:27, NIV).
    • Having a message means having an audience to serve. If God wants us to share a specific message conveyed through our stories, this means there are people who need to hear that. They need to hear exactly this story and this unique voice so it can minister best to their hearts. When we prepare to share our stories, let’s remember that it will be God’s provision and answer to a lot of people. 
    • Your story is unique because you are unique. Everybody goes through similar struggles, problems and painful experiences like losses, grief, illness, depression, hopelessness, anxiety, betrayal and more. But although these are common hardships and trials for everybody, each one of us has experienced them differently, in a unique set of circumstances, through which God has worked individually. Each of us has a unique heart, created lovingly by God, and our relationship with God and His work in our hearts is also unique. God knows us intimately, and He works with each of us individually. (Psalm 139:1) 
    • God has specifically gifted you and equipped you to share your story and testimony. God has not only given us unique voices and stories, but He has also gifted each one of us with a set of gifts, capabilities, talents and resources to enable us to share our stories. If we are tempted to doubt our callings, especially as writers and speakers for His glory, let’s remember that the Lord makes no mistakes, and through His strength and provision, we can do and accomplish anything He calls us to. (Philippians 4:13)

    Friend, next time you struggle with insecurity, doubts and comparison, you can remember that the world needs you and your story. You have a story to tell and your story matters. The world needs to hear your unique voice — yes, your voice.

      I don’t know how I feel as a writer, except that when I do write something, I either do something creative, or I write my thoughts down and try to apply scripture to it. I really don’t know where to begin. Should I do a blog or write a book? Should I write poetry or write a song? Should I do devotionals or something completely different? How do I know in what way God wants me to share the message? Help!

        Hi Elizabeth! What you describe is absolutely normal at the beginning of the writing journey. It will take time and testing and trying different things until you find your niche and develop your writing voice. My suggestion is simply to try different things and forms as God guides you and see how you feel about it. Continue to seek God’s guidance and be sure His plan will unfold and things will become clearer with every step. Blessings!

      How do I feel as a writer when God guides you to share your story?
      “I’m not a writer…”
      “I don’t know where to start.”
      “I don’t know what to do once I do.” Haha.

      I’ll be honest, there’s a lot of negative tapes that run through my mind when the Lord nudges me to write. Lies that have tried to snuff out my voice for far too long.

      The beautifully sung sentences transformed me to an intimate and real place with the Lord; a place where God was speaking directly to me. I can no longer run from the persistent love, and command, of His voice and purpose.

      Now if you asked me how I felt after God nudged me to write, I’d answer with a smile, “Inspired. Hopeful. Courageous, and finally excited to see what comes next.” ❤️

      So, thank you, Father, for using beautiful souls like Hadassah to pour out Your love and truth into the hearts of a multitude.

      And thank you, Hadassah, for being obedient. For being willing to share your heart, and even the not-so-pretty places. Because of bright lights like you, hearts and lives are changed forever.
