How To Walk Confidently in Your Calling as a Writer

Even when we know we have been called to write, we sometimes don’t feel confident in that calling. Dear friends, this is something every writer has gone through at some point. We want you to know you aren’t alone, and there’s wonderful news! Below, we have put together a couple of keys to reclaiming and holding on to your confidence in your calling to write.

Friend, if you read this, you have a calling to be a writer. You are a writer. But what is a calling, and how can we walk confidently in our callings as writers? Calling is God’s special purpose and plans for us to use our unique gifts and talents to reach people for Christ and advance God’s Kingdom.

As writers, God gave us the ministry and the mystery of words. We don’t just write; we love and understand the power of words; we know that words, especially God’s words, are spirit and life, (John 6:63) and they hold the dynamic power to transform lives.

This is an awesome calling and an enormous responsibility. And let’s admit it: It requires hard work, a lot of effort, practicing and learning. Often, we struggle with feelings of insecurity, inadequacy and insufficiency. Do our words matter? Do they truly make a difference? Is our writing good enough to be published? How to keep a steady motivation to keep writing in the busy seasons of life? These are questions that every one of us has asked herself.

What is the secret of walking confidently in your calling as a writer? I believe there are two keys to help us press on with confidence, especially when we meet roadblocks. These are passion and persistence

The first key is keeping our passion alive. Without passion and enthusiasm, it will be very difficult to stay confident and move forward. We can fuel our passion every day by reading and meditating on God’s Word and spending time in His presence. We can remember God’s special rhema words and the messages He has given to us when He ushered us into our callings.

For example, I keep a special notebook in which I have written all these special words, visions, and promises God has given me before I started writing and blogging and also during that journey. When I feel discouraged and insecure, I open this special notebook and read these life-giving and affirming words, praying them back to God. They always bring me encouragement and inspire me to continue pursuing my calling.

The second key to walking confidently in our callings as writers is persistence. Showing up every day willing to invest some minutes and hours in our writing is of enormous importance to our growth. The more we grow, the more confident we are.

Our willingness, availability and devotion are the things God needs, to pour into us and use us as vessels for His words and messages. Persistence is especially critical when we don’t see the results we expected. It is exactly then we need to continue making all the steps forward on our writing path and push through the discouragement and the fear of failure. We need to remember that God is faithful, and He takes care of all the seeds we plant with our words.

As writers called by God to minister through words, we need to remember that this calling is part of our identity. It is who we are. The challenges, the setbacks, the obstacles we meet on our writing journeys, and even our failures don’t change our identities and our callings. God is the initiator and the partner in our writing callings, and He is the One leading us faithfully along the road He has specifically designed for us. The only thing needed to walk confidently is to keep the fire burning in our hearts and to show up faithfully every day, willing and ready to capture and convey the words God gives us.

Blessings,

Hadassah Treu

  1. Thank you for this encouraging post.
As you suggested, I have started a notebook with affirmations, promises, and Scripture verses to read; this is such a great idea. Thank you 🙂
    God bless you,

Hadassah, I cannot convey how deeply this Blog right here spoke into my Soul. Thank you for every ‘rhema’ word and being His vessel. So many of these points I needed to hear deep down in my Soul place. You have encouraged me and illuminated some ‘old words’ – fresh and alive. I went immediately and grabbed my ‘green journal’ … special words, visions and promises of God given to me over the years. Thank you for that reminder! I NEEDED THIS TODAY and for my tomorrows, however many there may be.
Keep writing and touching lives for His Glory, Honor and Praise.
